01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
In Kyoto's Shimogyo Ward, Sawano pairs made-to-order Japanese Western cuisine (yoshoku) and kissaten fare with the intricate fruit-carving craft of its owner. The fruit garnishing the plates is transformed into charming shapes—frogs, little birds, puppies, and seasonal motifs—showcasing knife skills that regularly catch the eye of visitors. Books explaining these fruit-carving techniques are displayed inside, adding an engaging topic of conversation with the affable proprietor.
From Morning Sets to Hearty Yoshoku Plates
Service begins at 8:30 with popular morning sets combining toast, ham and eggs, vegetables, and drinks. At lunchtime, substantial meals take center stage: coarsely ground hamburg steaks with a satisfying texture, lunch platters pairing freshly fried croquettes with breaded deep-fried prawns (ebifurai), and classic omurice subtly sweetened by onions. The lineup remains welcoming throughout the day, extending to crisp katsu curry and homestyle hotcakes.
Unwinding by the Counter
Both counter and table seats are set throughout the dining room, providing a calm atmosphere where solo diners can settle in without fuss. After a meal or during an afternoon break, patrons can linger over carefully brewed coffee or fresh fruit juice blended on demand. Note that the shop accepts cash only, and with the master handling service on his own, planning for an unhurried visit is best.
